At DMU, people are the heart of everything we do. We are committed to being a truly inclusive university, with a workforce that reflects the diversity of the community we serve.

Everyone at DMU brings something unique, and it's this diversity of our staff, students, and local community that strengthens us, fuels our creativity, and opens up new opportunities.

We welcome applications from all individuals, considering them solely on merit - regardless of age, disability, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, martial status, pregnancy, or maternity. To ensure accessibility, we regularly review our facilities to make sure they are inclusive for everyone.

At DMU, we believe in the power of diversity and strive to create an environment where all staff and students are empowered to succeed.

We call this commitment DMU Freedom.

Working Families

DMU is a proud member of Working Families, the UK’s work-life balance charity. We are committed to helping working parents, carers, and employers find the right balance between home and work responsibilities. Our membership helps us build more flexible and supportive working environments for everyone.

Athena Swan and Race Equality Charter Mark

In 2018, we successfully renewed our Bronze Athena SWAN and Race Equality Charter Mark awards, recognising our commitment to advancing gender and race equality across all faculties. These awards highlight our dedication to improving representation, progression, and the overall working environment.

Stonewall Recognition

DMU is proud to be one of the most inclusive employers in Britain, recognised in Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers list for 2019, where we  ranked 31st—our highest position ever. We work closely with Stonewall to ensure that everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, feels valued and respected at DMU. For more about our work with Stonewall and the DMU LGBTQ+ Allies Staff Network, visit the Stonewall website.

Staff Networks

Our staff networks at DMU are vibrant, inclusive spaces that bring colleagues together, offering opportunities for consultation, professional development, and networking. We have networks for Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) staff, LGBTQ+ staff and allies, women staff (DMUWomen), and disabled staff. Additionally, we have Christian and Muslim chaplains who offer spiritual support to staff and students of all faiths or none.

We are a Disability Confident Employer.

We are dedicated to fostering a culture where everyone is treated with dignity and respect, where differences are valued, and where every individual is supported to thrive. This commitment includes addressing any disparity in representation, experience, or outcomes.

All interview panel members are trained in our recruitment policies to ensure fair and inclusive hiring practices. We also recognise that disabled applicants may need specific adjustments during the recruitment process, and we're here to support them every step of the way.

As a Disability Confident Employer, we are proud of our commitment to  equality and accessibility. We guarantee interviews to disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a role.
