Main duties and responsibilities

De Montfort University is a university of quality and distinctiveness, distinguished by our life-changing research, dynamic international partnerships, vibrant links with business and our commitment to excellence in learning, teaching and the student experience.

We offer more than 300 courses at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate, many of which offer professional accreditations, and links to industry or work experience. DMU undergraduate and postgraduate courses receive continual input from leading employers and professional bodies and are underpinned by world-leading research. This ensures they remain relevant and up-to-date and provide students with the skills and experience employers expect from candidates in a competitive job market.

Directorate

The role sits within the Information Governance Team, which is part of the Corporate Services Directorate, alongside the university’s Governance Office, Executive Services and Legal Services. We are a small, friendly team and you will be reporting to the Information Governance Manager, but also working closely with the university’s Data Protection Officer. You will liaise frequently with colleagues in Professional Services and Academic roles at all levels across the university.

Role

The Information Governance Officer role helps to ensure that DMU complies with its obligations under the Freedom of Information Act, Data Protection Act, Environmental Information Regulations and the UK General Data Protection Regulation.

Playing a pivotal role in ensuring DMU responds to Freedom of Information, Subject Access and associated requests within legislative timescales, you’ll also provide help and guidance for colleagues across the university in dealing with a broad range of information governance matters.  You’ll log and provide guidance on Data Protection Impact Assessments, and take ownership of investigating data breaches.

Ideal Candidate

You will ideally hold a relevant professional information governance qualification and/or significant experience in at least one defined area of information Governance (data protection; freedom of information; records management) and of applying related legal and/or regulatory requirements in that area.

We are seeking a candidate with strong communication, analytical and problem-solving skills as well as strong subject knowledge skills. You will also demonstrate experience of handling confidential and sensitive matters professionally.

This is a 0.6 FTE (22.2 hours per week) role. Due to the nature of the work, and to ensure statutory deadlines are met, we are ideally seeking someone who can work across the full working week, Monday to Friday, to support continuity and team cover.  We operate a hybrid model, with two days per week on campus, but are highly flexible about how hours are worked during the day.

Please note that salary is per annum (pro rata).
