Main duties and responsibilities

De Montfort University (DMU) is an ambitious, globally-minded institution with a relentless focus on delivering quality teaching and learning, and a campus-wide focus on providing a sector-leading student experience. The university is a vibrant, multicultural hub of learning, creativity and innovation that never surrenders to convention.

Faculty / Directorate

Library and Student Services provides students with engaging and creative opportunities for success in their learning. We provide a comprehensive range of supportive and facilitative services delivered through a range of library and learning spaces, our extensive resources and collections and through our award-winning learning support.

Our team, within Library Services, plays a lead role in the delivery of the directorate’s customer services (in person, online and via telephone), the day to day management of our learning spaces and the loan of the physical stock.

Our main Kimberlin Library is busy and vibrant, with extensive opening hours to support our diverse student body. This is an exciting time to join the directorate as we continue to develop our services to enhance the student experience.

Role

This role is based in the library at De Montfort University in the middle of our vibrant Leicester city centre campus.

You may not have worked in a library before; however, this role is well suited to those who have great customer service skills, a willingness to learn new skills and enjoy interacting with a wide range of people.

You will be helping our students access the information and support they need to make the most of their time at university, assisting with:

- resources for their studies

- IT queries

- referrals to colleagues for more in depth or specialist support

- their use of our learning spaces.

Daily, you’ll be staffing our library service points and be the first person many new and regular students will meet. Don’t worry though if you’ve not worked in a library before, you will receive full training in order to be able to provide proactive support for our customers who use the library facilities.

You will be required to complete a Level 2 Customer Service Practitioner Apprenticeship alongside the role. The role is 37 hours per week with one evening a week until 9pm and potential weekend working, on a fixed term basis for the duration of the apprenticeship.

Ideal Candidate

You will be passionate about delivering outstanding customer service and creating a welcoming environment for all users. Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to hold meaningful conversations and build strong rapport.

Enjoy working with young adults and be confident in engaging with people from a wide range of backgrounds. Provide practical assistance and guidance to help customers make the most of library facilities and services, particularly within busy study spaces.

Bring a positive attitude, a helpful approach, and a friendly, approachable manner to interactions with customers and colleagues.

Come and join our engaged and helpful team and support our busy and friendly library!

We look forward to receiving your application and hopefully welcoming you to be part of the Library Services team here at DMU whilst supporting you through your Apprenticeship!
