Main duties and responsibilities

Sustainability and the SDGs has been identified as a strategic priority for DMU and the university is delivering progress on sustainability across its teaching and learning, research and campus operations.

The Faculty/Directorate

The Estates & Facilities Directorate is large and diverse, employing circa 300 people. The directorate provides all services relating to the operation and maintenance of university building structures and associated engineering services, this encompasses planned maintenance and reactive repairs, internal cleaning, waste management, grounds maintenance, car parking, security, energy management and sustainability. The Estates and Facilities Directorate aims to provide an attractive, efficient and effective campus, which supports a safe, healthy, accessible and diverse environment for teaching, learning; research, living, commercial activity and working.

The role

  • An exciting short-term opportunity has arisen in the Estates and Facilities Directorate as part of the sustainability team to assist in the monitoring, coordination, delivery and administration of sustainability initiatives at De Montfort University.
  • The post holder will work on a variety of different projects and initiatives including sustainable travel, education for sustainable development, environmental management and engaging staff and students in sustainable behaviour change.
  • The post holder will also be responsible for the coordination the university’s sustainable transport activities and encouraging the participation of staff and students in these initiatives.

Ideal candidate

  • You will have relevant experience of working on environmental and transport related issues. You will have an understanding of transport and environmental legislation, and knowledge of best practice. You will have the ability to focus on and respond positively to stakeholder requirements to ensure that relevant targets are met.
  • You will be enthusiastic and conscientious with a clear commitment to sustainable development.
  • You will also have the ability to produce accurate reports using Microsoft word and excel, and experience of social media to promote events and activities.

This is a short-term role until the end of July 2026.
