Job Description: 

Purpose

The purpose of the Technical Instructor role is to provide technical support and expertise to ensure the smooth operation of the university's laboratories, workshops, and other technical facilities. This role is essential in maintaining equipment, supporting academic and research activities, and ensuring a safe and efficient working environment for students, faculty, and staff.

Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen to support students and staff at De Montfort University within the Art and Design Wood Workshop. The nature and extent of support you will provide is broad and varied and candidates will need to have good knowledge of woodworking techniques and process alongside their extensive knowledge of materials, machinery and health and safety. 

 

As a Technical Instructor (Woodwork) you will provide a full technical support service to students and staff, including training, practical assistance and advice on the use of equipment and appropriate process and techniques. You will be responsible for the day-to-day organisation and management of the workshop including ensuring compliance with DMU Health & Safety Policy as it applies to their work area and activities. 

 

All staff are also expected to understand the need to put students first and to be proactive in improving the support that students receive. 

 

The Person 

You will have a good standard of general education with a qualification in a design related subject. You will have experience of working within a prototyping/model making environment and have experience as woodworker / carpenter and have knowledge of both contemporary and traditional practice in Art & Design.  

 

This role will require you to be flexible and organised, whilst continually maintaining and overseeing the safe use of equipment within your workshop
